REVEALED: The Rogues that surround President Jonathan (Minister of State, Nyesom Wike in Mega Bribery Scandal )

Image

The activities around the disbursement of federated funds to the ministries, department and agencies of the federation may have found a new veiled sharing formula unbeknown to the drafters of the original guidelines for the distribution formula of allocation funds. Information available to 247ureports.com obtained through sources employed at the federal ministry of education in Abuja reveals the sordid practices of financial crimes through contentious bribery – in scales never witnessed before at the federal ministry.

As gathered, the Federal Minister of State at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike may have elevated the simple coded act of bribery within the state ministries into a new quantum leap – that has caught the Principals of many of the federally owned secondary schools across the nation – crying foul behind the protective covers of their offices away from the Minister of State.

As a caveat, the Minister of State is saddled with the responsibility of overseeing all the federally owned secondary schools while the Minister of Education is responsible for the federally owned tertiary institutions. Through this arrangement, Nyesom Wike manages all the federal government secondary schools – including the authority to discharge or transfer school principals.

For this reason, Nyesom Wike exerts considerable authority over the school principals.

The new plot unleashed by Wike on the Ministry narrated to 247ureports.com by frustrated but frightened school principals who have to present themselves to the Accountant General of the Federation to collect the quarterly allocations accorded to them by the Federal Ministry of Finance for the upkeep and management of the various federal government secondary schools – consist of a catch-22 which asked each of the school principals for percentage kickbacks from the allocated funds. Typically, the Minister of State is said to demand a 15% kickback from the released monies through the principals.

With the recent disbursement for the 4th Quarter ending December 2012 to the federal government owned education institutions to the amount N16.7billion [N16,706,314,319] by the federal government through the office of the ministry of finance, the Minister of State, Mr. Wike summoned the principals of the schools his [Wike] care for a closed door meeting at the federal secretariat in Abuja. The meeting saw the Minister of State tell the various school principals that the percentage returns expected from them have increased from 15% to 40% [- equivalent to an increase from N2.5billion to N6.68billion for the 4th quarter of 2012 alone]. This did not seat well with the school principals. The range of monies released for the 4th quarter to each school [numbering about 70] span from N11.6million to N82million.

Two of the school principals spoke to 247ureports.com – stating that the 40% demand came as a catch-22 affair – where they found themselves unable to fight-back at the Minister of State – who has the complete authority to sack them without pension or access to the other accumulated gratuities. “Because of this, we go back to the school without enough money to do anything tangible or meaningful” said one of the school principals while adding also that the corruption at the Minister’s office was “too airtight and concretized” to evade the prying  eyes of investigators – “who will talk?”

The school principal pointed to the dilapidating infrastructures that litter the school compounds of federal government colleges across the country as symptomatic of the illegal deductions [forced bride] made at the office of the Minister of State quarterly.

Cursory inquiry performed by 247ureports.com reveals what appears to be the reason behind the aggressive illegal deductions by the Minister of State – who was a one-time head of the Jonathan presidency campaign – while he served as the chief of staff to the Rotimi Amaechi administration in Rivers State. The upcoming 2015 electoral season is reported to have a direct cause to the behavior of the Minister. The Minister, according a source within the Ministry, has expressed interests of joining the gubernatorial contests of 2015 – and may have begun amassing the ‘necessary’ financial war-chest. Another more authoritative source shared a differing view – he indicated that the monies being amassed were for the Jonathan 2015 re-election campaign. 247ureports.com is not certain.

But the Minister of State has not been entirely unfamiliar with financial crimes. It is recalled that while he served as the chief of staff to the Rivers State government, he was arrested by agents of the then Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] over allegations of embezzlement and money laundering of over N2.5billion. He was arrested and detained at the detention cell of the EFCC for a period of 4days before being arraigned in court.  However following the arraignment by the Farida Waziri-led EFCC, the case “walked away” and was never brought up again. This was months before President Jonathan appointed him one of the heads of his campaign organization.

Efforts to reach the Minister failed.

PROFILE

Lionel Messi is the heir apparent to the throne left vacant by Diego Armando Maradona. The waters are divided between those who consider him to be far from being the best No. 10, and those who believe that Messi will be even better than Maradona.

Born in Rosario, he cut his teeth in the youth ranks of Newell’s Old Boys, until a hormonal problem that affected his growth changed the plans of his family and, of course, his personal future. Facing expensive treatment for their son, Messi’s parents moved to Spain as Newell’s were not able to afford the medical costs related to his condition, and even the wealthiest Argentine teams, such as River Plate, refused to foot the bill.

After his first trial with Barcelona, the Catalan coaches had no doubts. They decided to sign Messi and pay for his medical treatment. His growth was noticeable within Barca, and in little time he came to be considered one of the great talents at the club. He made his debut in the first division in October 2004, against Espanyol, and Barcelona have since adopted him as one of their greatest idols.

His first championship would come in the Liga season of 2004-05. Since then, and playing a more prominent role every season, he has won every major club trophy at Camp Nou – including a stunning haul of six in 2008-09 – and claimed the World Player of the Year award three times in three years, leaving many in little doubt as to the fact that Messi is the best player of his generation; possibly of all-time.

That idea was given further weight in March 2012 when, at the age of 24, he became the all-time top scorer at Barcelona – beating the 232 goals of Cesar Rodriguez.

Strengths: His ball skills are second to none, his runs from midfield are usually lethal and he is almost impossible to tackle when he gets his head down. His balance when running at speed is incredible.

Weaknesses: Too often he searches for a way to finish moves by himself without looking for team-mates in a better position to shoot at goal.

Career high: Winning the 2009, 2010 and 2011 World Player of the Year awards.

Career low: He was unable to perform to his best in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where Argentina were eliminated in the quarter-finals with Messi looking on from the bench.

Style: Quick, incisive, balanced, a stylish runner with the ball.

Quotes: “Messi is my Maradona,” said Maradona himself, as the head coach of the Argentine national team.

Trivia: His debut with the national team (against Hungary) was a disaster: he entered the game in the 18th minute of the second half, and 47 seconds later was sent off.

PROFILE

A much-vaunted prodigy when snapped up by Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, Ronaldo is now perhaps, alongside Lionel Messi and David Beckham, the best-known player on the planet.

The FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008 and a winger who plundered an unbelievable 42 goals across all competitions in 2007-08, Ronaldo won all there was to win with the Red Devils and finally earned his dream move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for a world record fee of £80 million as part of the new era ofgalacticos at the Bernabeu.

After blossoming under Sir Alex Ferguson at United, he had the chance to come of age at the 2006 World Cup, though one of the memorable images of the tournament was his wink at the bench after Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney was sent off in a game against England. He also came in for fierce criticism for diving, which resulted in him being booed at games and it cost him the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Still, love him or loathe him, it is hard to ignore his talent and his skills are almost beyond comparison in the world game. That said, Ronaldo has wrongs to right after he failed to dazzle at the 2010 World Cup, despite being tipped to be the shining star in South Africa.

He remains, though, prolific as ever for his club Real, the Portuguese earning the Pichichi as La Liga’s top scorer in 2010-11, in the same season helping his club to Copa del Rey glory. Indeed, his prolific nature in front of goal did not spot there, as during the 2011-12 season he scored 46 La Liga goals to help fire Real to the Spanish title.

Strengths: Ronaldo will take on any defender with searing pace, and mesmerising footwork to boot. His ability to beat a player and whip in crosses makes him a feared opponent. Add to that the way his free-kicks swerve with pace and power and this winger would be an asset to any team, past and present.

Weaknesses: On occasion, he goes to ground far too easily which attracts the ire of supporters and sometimes tries a trick when a simple pass would do.

Career high: Winning the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008, and subsequently being named FIFA’s World Player of the Year.

Career low: Losing to Greece in the final of Euro 2004 on home turf. His tears were caught on camera for all to see.

Style: Fast, tricky, strong, a mesmeric dribbler.

Quotes: “I have nothing but praise for the boy. He is easily the best player in the world. He is better than Kaka and better than Messi. He is streets ahead of them all. His contribution as a goal threat is unbelievable. His stats are incredible. Strikes at goal, attempts on goal, raids into the penalty box, headers. It is all there. Absolutely astounding.” Sir Alex Ferguson, July 2009.

Trivia: Cristiano’s name Ronaldo came from his father’s favourite actor, Ronald Reagan

Nawa oh! Federal Civil Service Commission Renovates 26 Toilets With N28m

Image

The Senate, yesterday, described as ridiculous a total sum of N28 million spent this year by the Federal Civil Service Commission, FCSC, to renovate 26 toilets facilities.

The Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service chaired by Senator Aloysius Etok, PDP, Akwa Ibom North-West was also told that N18 million was expended to renovate the commission’s offices in 2012 and N25 million went to ITC equipment for the offices.

Disclosing this when she led others to defend the 2013 budget of the Commission, Chairman of FCSC, Deaconess Joan Olatoyosi, informed the commission that over N129 million was approved for the commission to conduct the 2012 interview and promotion of civil servants, adding that N70 million was released by the Federal Government to complement the N59 million earlier released by government to conduct the exercise, just as she explained that this led to the promotion of 1,229 workers out of the 4,034 civil servants interviewed.

The Commission’s Chairman however denied insinuation that staff of the Commission collect N500,000 from any applicant as kickback for employment and challenged anyone with proof to come forward.

Etok while reacting described the commission’s expenditure as a clear case of robbery. According to him, he wondered why the commission could go such extra mile in defrauding government in such manner, adding: “As a chairman of this committee, let me say here that we disagree with this and on this note, we request to meet with all those involved in this contract.

“We, the politicians are the ones that people call thieves; nobody calls you, the civil servants thieves.”

Boko Haram Crisis: Where Were You When I Visited Maiduguri? – OBJ Fires Back At Gen. Gowon

Image

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has fired back at his former boss, Gen. Yakubu Gowon for calling his comments on the Jonathan administration’s handling of Boko Haram insurgency as ‘highly irresponsible.’

It would be recalled that two weeks ago at a book launch in Warri, Delta state in honour of  Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor’s 40th year in ministry, Obasanjo had called on President Jonathan to show more firmness in his handling of Boko Haram.

A week after Obasanjo made his comments, Gen. Gowon while speaking at the sidelines during a book launch, responded to the comments, saying, “Obasanjo is highly irresponsible to have made such comments about the present government. Many people have condemned what he (Obasanjo) did in Odi and Zaki Biam. So, it was irresponsible for him to defend it or accuse the present administration.”

But in a statement released yesterday, Obasanjo, speaking through his media assistant, Malam Garba Deen Mohammed, said that he showed his commitment to peace by leaving Abeokuta to Maiduguri to mediate with Boko Haram and threw a poser asking “Where was Gowon?”.

Quoting further from the statement, Obasanjo said, “There’s nothing irresponsible about my comments on the insecurity in Nigeria. I was only interpreting the reality. I expressed an opinion on the way the Boko Haram crisis is being handled and said if the current strategy is not working, then there has to be a change of strategy to achieve results. If the strategy were working, Boko Haram would have become a thing of the past by now.”

The statement further read: “In expressing my opinion, I drew from my personal experience. General Gowon can disagree with me without being insultive. Gowon’s comment is unkind, unfair, and unguarded.”

Apparently displeased by Gowon’s response, OBJ as he is fondly called, added that, “Just two weeks ago, the government of Borno State came out in the open to declare that it had been abandoned by the Federal Government. Why didn’t Gowon convince the Federal Government to help Maiduguri?

“Where was Gowon? Why has he not visited Maiduguri to solicit for peace? Is he not a leader of the North? What effort has he made to ensure an end to the crisis?”

His Holiness, Pope Benedict on twitter @pontifex

Image

The secret’s out. Pope Benedict’s new handle on Twitter will be @pontifex, beating out other contenders that had been considered to showcase the thoughts of one of the world’s most visible leaders.

Benedict already has 1.2 billion “followers” in the standard sense of the word but next week he will have another type when he enters what for any 85-year old is the brave new world of Twitter.

The Vatican said on Monday that the pope will start tweeting on December 12.

“The handle is a good one. It means ‘pope’ and it also means ‘bridge builder’,” said Greg Burke, senior media advisor to the Vatican.

Among the other handles that Vatican officials had reportedly considered was @BenedictusPPXVI, but they opted for something that was linked to the office of the papacy.

But don’t expect tweets about how the pope is feeling or which soccer team he is praying to win a derby.

The papal tweets will be spiritual, Burke told a news conference, and the pope will tweet when and how often he wants.

And, even though Benedict is not the kind of person who walks around with a Blackberry or iPad, Burke said “all the pope’s tweets are the pope’s words. Nobody is going to be putting words into his mouth.”

The first papal tweets will be answers to questions sent to #askpontifex.

The tweets will be going out in Spanish, English, Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and French. Other languages will be added in the future.

Primarily the tweets will come from the contents of his weekly general audience, Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church holidays. They will also include reaction to major world events, such as natural disasters.

Benedict will be pushing the button on his first tweet himself on Dec. 12 but in the future most will be written by aides and he will sign off on them.

But while the pope will be one of the world’s most high-profile tweeters and have many followers, he will not be following anyone himself.

“This is the new market of ideas and the Church has to be there. We want to use any method to spread the message. It’s cost-effective and not very labour intensive and it is aimed at young people,” Burke said.

PELLETS OF WISDOM

The Vatican said precautions had been taken to make sure the pope’s certified account is not hacked. Only one computer in the Vatican’s secretariat of state will be used for the tweets.

Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, head of the Vatican’s communications commission, said while he himself was not a big twitter fan he understood its importance and its possibilities for the Church.

“Reducing the pope’s message to 140 characters is definitely a challenge but we have seen that a profound thought can also be expressed in a brief Biblical passage,” Celli said. “We can see this as sparks of truth or pellets of wisdom”.

And are there any fears that it could create problems with a type of social media that generates so much discussion?

“I think the risk would be not to go there because you are afraid of going there. Then you would leave vacant a space that is important to spread the pope’s teachings,” said Monsignor Paul Tighe of the Vatican’s communications commission.

The pope’s Twitter page is designed in yellow and white – the colours of the Vatican, with a backdrop of the Vatican and his picture. It may change during different liturgical seasons of the year and when the pope is away from the Vatican on trips.

The pope, who still writes his speeches and books by hand, has given a qualified blessing to social networking.

In a document issued last year, he said the possibilities of new media and social networks offered “a great opportunity”, but warned of the risks of depersonalisation, alienation, self-indulgence, and the dangers of having more virtual friends than real ones.

In 2009, a new Vatican website, http://www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an application called “The pope meets you on Facebook”, and another allowing the faithful to see the pontiff’s speeches and messages on their iPhones or iPods.

The Vatican famously got egg on its face in 2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it had surfed the web more, it might have known that a traditionalist bishop whose excommunication was lifted had for years been a Holocaust denier.

JUGGLING JUSTICE by Gabriel Faniyan

Don’t go on this journey

But it did not shout loud enough.

The night has not really been an enemy

I wish it could play all over again So I would stop the movie

Right here, right now It is too horrible to watch.

At first, I could take the beating

But we were not mute. We were talking – explaining

Somebody must hear us – We are not criminals!

Man was born and man will die

Dear God, give us a few more years

I screamed innocence and I got struck

Missed my head and hit my chin

The pain was getting high, unbearable

Another slap – these hands were made with iron

I can take it I disobeyed Mama “do not walk at night”

My headaches, my mind is in disarray

I felt my skin tear. I felt blood It is okay, just let us go

If we must be punished – Debtor please don’t pay the money again

The crowd increased.

That is more trouble but I was taught to hope

Hope even in the absence of light

Hope in the night It will soon end now

Day lights coming. Everything will be all right

I can see the sunshine

We made a mistake

This was illegal contact We agree – warn us. We have taken stripes

Let us go now and all will be fine

Let us go now and we would learn our lesson

I will tell my friends – I will tell my children

I would become a lawyer in future

I will stop juggling justice

I felt a hand on my clothes

No, stop that – I am not six years old

I hit his hand away I only take my bath outside in the dark

I felt more than twenty hands return

My shirt was gone – shirtless you came into the world

I held to my trousers. Took blows to my face like a stone

If we will suffer, God let it not be like this.

What did I do wrong? A walk in the Night?

My face cried for a touch

The blows were wicked with names less instruments

Head needed hand for shield

Hands held on to my boxers-dignity first.

Naked you came into the world

Thus you shall depart

The balance was tilting We were thrashed to the ground

The law-If I must suffer let it not be like this

I remember but I confessed

I had joined to hit a class-thief before

Could this be payment

We let him go

We let him go

I have repented

I tried to stand but it was painful

I am going to die-God give me one month

God please – let this pass away

Let somebody come

My helper is out there

They came but the crowd would not let them pass

If you hit on the right turn

I obeyed – it was better than striking the same spot

It was day light. I found myself in a refuse dump.

My urine and my blood, I smelled like dung

I thought about my babe

We were fighting But it was just a joke.

I did not speak to her yesterday

I thought about John

We were supposed to eat at that calabar kitchen

The best soup in aluu

I tasted my blood

I am going to die but God can I have a week?

Who brought these tyres?

Were they wheeling us to hell?

I was naked but I was not ashamed.

It seemed normal

Mud was my clothes

Mud was my skin

People were supposed to be my covering

Be happy you who are just sick

Be happy if you die in accident

I cannot write how I feel

If you die in any other way – be happy

I could not see my friends no more

If we must die, let one of us remain

I must be strong

The body has reserve energy – I will save

Help is on the way

I have not written my will

Who would take these bones?

Where will my spirit go?

The movie is ending

I can feel it now

Short trips to the underworld – glimpses

It looks dark

I hear voices calling me

In and out but to give up on life is not easy

I still clung on to hope

A citizen has right to a fair hearing

Nigeria good people great nation

Something can still happen

I have broken a lot but modern medicine can still fix me

Plastic surgery

My shame can still go away

In just one second

The police would come

The cell is better

What came next was a big stone to my head

Petrol

Tyres like a medal I was too weak to resist

Bring it on Aluu bring on your worst

Sticks blows to my head

I felt for my brothers

I saw him motionless – he was not dead

I heard his soul

Aluu let your community be unborn.

Let evil put your all back to the wombs that gave you birth

One person must live to tell the tale

I saw an old man come out

He must be talking to the men

We will be freed. I clutched to hope again but it was disastrous

The fuel was burning

My elbow was out of joint

I did not even know when they lit any matches

I felt the heat

Impulse to run

Brain gives the command

But there was no power to execute.

If you can’t fly, creep

I could do none

My body is on fire

All hope now is lost – Judgement. Revenge.

An eye for an eye the world is blind

I am already dead

Brother let us forgive

Heaven is our only hope now.

I forgive you

Aluu

This last time

I forgive you

Wicked tradition

We forgive all hands that hit me

But let my death be the last

Let our sacrifice be enough

Let our songs win your heart

We forgive illiteracy

We forgive ignorance

This one last time

Let it go with our breaths

The spirit is willing but the body is weak

If this can be the last

We sincerely forgive you

Nigeria, If you will stop juggling justice

In memory of Chiakida Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku and Tekena Elkanah who met their waterloo at Umuokiri Village, Aluu, Rivers State

He was here (tributes to Bewaji Michael) by Bunmi Oke

BEWAJI MICHAEL (1983 – 2010)

Hopes. Aspirations. Dreams

He H.A.D them all

Though not to the brim

But to a degree, far as I recall.

Sickle” would’ve been fine for a farm tool

Cell” would’ve remained harmless in his body

Anaemia” would’ve been less of a challenge too

But these three in marriage? A huge, huge worry!

Why gang up to crush him in stampede?

Why shatter what he H.A.D, rendering it all messy?

His aching bones and agonizing cries you didn’t even heed

Callous threesome totalling lacking in mercy.

Now all he ever H.A.D – gone into thin air

Though he loved life, death just didn’t care

We’re glad though sad, delighted though in despair

That at least, for a while, he was here.
